Just when you think you’ve seen everything Mother Nature has to offer, she throws you another curve ball. Meet the saola, one of the rarest animals on Earth.
Nicknamed the “Asian unicorn,” the animal, similar to an antelope was first spotted in mountains around Laos in 1992.
An extremely shy animal, the saola avoids human settlements.
It is thought that only a few hundred, at most, are left in the wild. Some estimate their numbers may be even lower, possibly only several dozen remaining. To make matters worse, saola are hunted and have never survived captivity, making conservation efforts challenging.
