Review: Frosted Morning & Midnight

Frosted Morning & Midnight is a letter-size, softcover adult coloring book full of original geometric snowflake designs by Dawn McAndrew, of Dawn’s Delirious Designs.

The book contains 16 unique snowflake-inspired geometric designs, each printed on just one side the page. Some of the pages focus on a single, relatively simple snowflake; others feature a pattern of many snowflakes, or a very complex single snowflake. The really interesting thing about this book is that each design is printed on both white and black backgrounds, for a total of 32 pages to color. The geometric designs on a black background allow your colors to really pop off the page!

This is a self-published book printed through CreateSpace, so keep in mind that the paper is a light weight. It is the perfect paper for pencils. Water-based markers may or may not bleed to the next page, so it’s a good idea to slip a piece of paper or two under the page you are working on to protect the pages behind. Alcohol-based markers will definitely bleed, so definitely protect the pages behind!

Geometric coloring books were some of the first coloring books I really used when I got back into the adult coloring trend, and I still have a big soft spot for them. There is just something about them that makes them mesmerizingly relaxing. This book just takes things one step further, with a snowflake theme that is perfect this time of year!

With geometric designs, you have the perfect opportunity to test out fun new color schemes. I started this with a five-color color scheme that includes three shades of purple and two of mustard yellow.

The markers I used were the same I’ve used for most of the reviews on this blog — my set of Tombow brush pens. Then, I added accents with my gold Signo Uni-ball gel pen. The whole process involved starting on the same side and circling around to the same part of the design all around the side; if I wasn’t filming I would have spun the paper, but I avoided this for sake of a better video!

Next I think I’m going to do one of the pages with a black background. It is a little more forgiving of staying in the lines than the white background pages, since the black background will keep the edges neat.

Overall, I really enjoyed coloring this book. It’s perfect for anyone who enjoys geometric designs, especially this time of year!
