I love hearing about new coloring books by independent coloring book artists, so I was thrilled when Elizabeth from Zelibar Art shared her first coloring book, Fractal Designs 1! This small, square adult coloring book packs a punch with designs based on her unique fractal artwork. The pages contain abstract, symmetrical designs (designed around a central point, similar to mandalas) with thin, pale outlines that disappear into the artwork after you’ve colored it in.

A Look Inside Fractal Designs 1
Fractal Designs 1 is a comfortably small 8.5″ square coloring book with a distinctive satin-y white and orange cover. The linework is traced from some of Elizabeth’s original fractal designs. Check out some of these gorgeous examples of her fractal work from her Instagram:
In total, there are 25 unique designs to color in the book, printed on just one side of the page. The paper is crisp white and a little on the thin side, as the book is printed with CreateSpace. This might make it challenging for some types of supplies but the paper is perfect for others (more on that later)!
The designs are printed with very fine lines. This can make it a little challenging to stay within the lines, but I love how the lines practically disappear into the artwork once it is colored!
The designs included in the book range in complexity. Some pages include larger spaces and are great for adding in your own texture and shading within those spaces. Others have smaller spaces, and a more intricate design.
Here are a few sample pages from the book:
Here are what the pages look like inside the book:
As you can see, the lines are very thin, as I mentioned. I think of this as an invitation to free yourself from staying within the lines! Use them as a guide; they are light and will mostly disappear into your design unless you are using very light colors.

Here are some of the pages I’ve colored from the book:
I’ve colored two full pages from the book so far, and have started a few other pages. Here’s the first, colored in with Tombow markers:
This was really fun! I ended up changing my color scheme about halfway through, but I like the end result — it feels a little like a space flower! I love all those astrological blues and purples and it was fun to lay down some texture over the “petals.”
Like with all CreateSpace books I’ve ever colored, the page began curling a little while I was using my markers, but I had it clipped in my clipboard so it stayed pretty straight. If you want to flatten out your pages after you color them, just wait for them to dry and then stick them under a heavy book overnight.
By the way, I cut the page out of the book using my x-acto knife. Since I prefer to color outside the book, this made it super easy to remove the page.
Check out my speed coloring video below:
I also really wanted to test out watercolors or watercolor pencils with the book to see how they worked with the designs, and I am so glad I did, because it was a lot of fun!
I am by no means an expert at painting with watercolors — I was an art major in college but my focus was video art so I never really got the chance to paint besides a class I took one summer. So, I guess what I am trying to say, is if you are a little better-versed with watercolors, you may have a different experience! I also didn’t have a chance to try out coloring with watercolor pencils, which might be easier to keep drier as you work.
For me, I used too much water, and the page really started curling. Wah! It has flattened out a little overnight under the book like I mentioned, but it’s still pretty wrinkly, as you can see in the photo. But ahh! These designs work so well with watercolors! I might even make photocopies out of the book onto watercolor paper, because I really like the idea of the geometric shapes being the basis of a watercolor painting. Plus the lines fade so nicely into the paint; they’re still there to give it some structure, but they aren’t obtrusive at all.
Overall, I really enjoyed the book! I love trying out independent artists’ coloring books because they are all so unique, and Fractal Designs 1 was no exception! The lightly-outlined fractals were the perfect starting point to creating my own geometric artwork.
Okay, I’m sold… how do I get a copy?
If the sample pages I showed above look appealing to you, I definitely encourage you go pick up your own copy on Amazon! For just $11.85 (and sometimes Amazon runs sales!) you can pick up your very own copy of this book and create your own colored fractals.

Question.. when I try to do anything with the contest.. its say I am entering too many entries.. and that was only 1 thing.. i can’t enter if it won’t let me
Hi Bill,
I’m sorry, that’s really weird, I’ve never seen that error before!
If you are trying to enter from a phone or from the Facebook app, I would recommend trying again from a desktop computer. If you are already on a computer, has someone with the same IP address recently entered? You can also try switching to another browser.
Good luck!
I just got the most bizarre Cthulhu coloring book yesterday. It is maddeningly beautiful! It even included a couple mandala style designs. Those are always my favorite. These are neat because the designs allow space to add your own little detail in there too.
All of the links appear to be broken in this email.
Hi Vicki,
Oh no! Do you mean the email I sent out with the free page from the Make Your Mark giveaway? Let me know and I can email you the right link!
Thanks,
Adrienne
The instant that I posted that the links appeared to be broken, it showed up. I’m entered now. Thank you.
Hooray, I’m glad it’s working for you now! Good luck! ☺️
I entered!! This looks amazing. I hope you got my entry :-)
Hi Kim! Thank you, I’m glad you enjoyed the post!!

It won’t let me enter for some reason. It keep saying something went wrong on gleam.
