It’s been a crazy couple of weeks here. I’m excited though, because I’ve got a really awesome new giveaway for you today!
I loved getting a chance to try out Romance Comic Coloring Books back in February when I reviewed their eighth coloring book. This unique series brings covers from out of print romance comics from the 40s, 50s, and 60s back to life as kitschy coloring books. They are really fun to color — plus, if you want to recreate the original, it is very easy to find the original covers online to replicate as you color.
This special edition from Romance Comic Coloring Books celebrates the powerful lady crime fighters of the bygone Golden Age of Adventure Comics.

Here’s the video review!
A Look Inside Don’t Mess With These Dames!
Don’t Mess With These Dames!, like other Romance Comic Coloring Books, is made to look and feel a lot like a classic comic book. On the front it features Black Cat and some of the other heroines found inside.
The cover is glossy and the book is slimmer than most coloring books, mimicking the size of a comic book. It features ten covers to color: Black Cat, Miss Masque, Star Flagg Undercover Girl, Wildfire, Mysta of the Moon, Lady Luck, Phantom Lady, Invisible Scarlet O’Neil, Jungle Princess Vooda, and Black Phantom.
The book is printed through CreateSpace, so the paper is pretty thin and has a bit of tooth to it. Despite this, I was pleasantly surprised to see a minimal amount of bleed-through from my water-based Tombow dual-ended brush markers and alcohol-based skin tone Copic marker. While there are definite shadows on the back of the page I colored from my markers, nothing reached the next page. I have a light touch with markers, so your results may vary, but I was happy with the strength of the paper for my purposes.
The comic covers are printed on just one side of the page. On the other side, you can read Bernie’s amusing commentary about each super heroine, their origin story, and the superpowers they possess. It was very entertaining just reading the information about each super lady!

Here are a few sample pages from the book:
Like the other book from this series I’ve colored, I had a lot of fun coloring these comic book covers! I love that you can find the original covers online to get color inspiration from.
Here are a few sample pages:
Here’s the first page I’ve colored so far:
I chose this page because there is a lot going on here: the colorful explosion in the background, her long wavy hair, the fierce jungle jaguar by her side. I used the original comic cover as reference (which I quickly found on Google Image Search and printed out). As I mentioned before, I colored this with Tombow dual-ended brush markers and a skin tone Copic marker.
Like I said before, I think these comic book covers make for a really exciting coloring experience! The thick outlines are very forgiving (especially when you’re keeping your head far back from the page while coloring on video… ahem) and the end result is REALLY cool. Not even kidding, when I showed my boyfriend my finished image he thought I was showing him the reference image I printed out. Not to brag or anything — the results are just THAT good.
Check out my speed coloring video below:
I feel like there is something for everyone here. The block text to color in, the central character, the animal, the background. You can fill in flat blocks of color like I did (similar to the original covers, printed with a limited color palette), or you can follow the printed shading to all your own dimensionality to the drawing.
I also had the opportunity to color one of the coloring t-shirts, which are one-of-a-kind and only available right here, in this giveaway! Each winner will receive their own design, either Black Cat, Lady Luck, or Miss Masque.
To give myself a flat surface to work on, and protect the other side of the t-shirt, I wrapped it around a cutting board before coloring. I used the same Crafts 4 All Fabric Markers that are a part of this giveaway — you can see that they work quite well! These fabric markers, which come in a set of 12, are double-ended, so you have a wedge-shaped side for filling in larger areas, and a smaller tip for detail work. They also have a good amount of ink in the barrel; I used a ton of red and the red marker showed no signs of running low.
I made a speed video for the t-shirt, too! Check it out below:
Overall, I had a blast coloring my first page from Don’t Mess With These Dames! The page I ended up with really looked like a comic book cover, to the extent that if I cut it out of the book, I could possibly fool people into thinking it is a comic book. How cool is that?! I really enjoyed coloring it and see myself coming back to color Star Flagg: Undercover Girl very soon.
Okay, I’m sold… how do I get a copy?
If the sample pages I showed above look appealing to you, I definitely encourage you go pick up your own copy on Amazon! While you are at it, check out some of Romance Comic Coloring Books’ other titles, like issue #8 or #7, all under $10.
