Imagine you’re taking a vacation in the tropics. When you think of tropical waters, what comes to mind? Scuba diving? Serene beaches? Warm and shallow stretches of sparking blue ocean? Try 200 meter deep sinkholes! Yes, that’s right, in the middle of the beautiful idyllic Bahamas lies Dean’s Blue Hole, the deepest saltwater “blue hole” known to scientists.
Blue holes are the name scientists give to water-filled vertical caves or sinkholes. The name comes from the contrast of pale blue shallow water surrounding the deep blue plunge. They tend to be very striking, both above and below the water level.
Dean’s Blue Hole is 202 meters deep, or 663 feet, well beyond the typical blue hole depth of 110 meters. Under the entrance to the sinkhole, the cavern widens out.
